The Hierarchy view is a representation of tasks and their subtasks in a layered list view. In the Hierarchy view, you can manipulate the hierarchy of tasks by dragging and dropping them along a vertical and horizontal axis. Tasks that appear in the Hierarchy view also appear in the Mind Map view and can be edited there!

Creating a hierarchy view

To create a hierarchy view, click the tiny "+" in the view tab at the very top of your project.

Creating Tasks and Subtasks

Tasks and Subtasks are hierarchically linked through the Subtask field. Tasks that are in the first level of the hierarchy are parent tasks that unfold child tasks and their successors. Just like in the List view, you can create tasks by clicking the "Add Task..." bar at the top of the view. Any task added in this way is a first-level task.

To create a subtask, either drag any task from elsewhere in the view under another task or open a task and add a task in to the "Subtasks" field.

Tasks you add as subtasks automatically appear in the hierarchy field and in the associated mind map.

Unconnected tasks

If you have already created tasks in your project, they will appear in the Unconnected Tasks panel. You can open this pane by clicking "Unconnected" in the top right of the Hierarchy view.

Unconnected tasks are not subtasks, nor are they parent tasks to other tasks in the hierarchy, and thus they are not displayed on the mind map view.

Unconnected tasks can be added to the hierarchy by dragging and dropping them onto the Hierarchy panel. The hierarchy assigned to a task depends on where you place it. Tasks inserted at the very top have a first-level hierarchy (i.e. they do not become a subtask); if you drag a task below another task, it becomes a subtask of that task.

Manage the hierarchy view settings

To manage hierarchy view settings, click the "..." icon in the upper right corner of the view.

Here you can rename the view, resize the tasks, collapse or show all tasks and choose whether the view is shown to all members of the project or not by activating the "Team View" switch.

Compress and open subtasks

You can compress the entire view to see only first-tier tasks. To do this, click the "..." icon in the upper right corner of the view and then also "Close All". To open/show all tasks in the hierarchy view, click "Open All".

If you want to collapse or open only a subset of tasks in the view, you can use the small arrow icons displayed on the tasks to toggle the lists of displayed and hidden tasks.
