Hypernotes wouldn't be a Zenkit product without an effective set of task management tools! Tasks in Hypernotes are an optional feature that you can enable in the notebook settings (although they're enabled by default, anyway).

You can create tasks on two levels: Notebook and Page tasks, and also view all tasks throughout all of your notebooks from your homepage.

Creating Tasks

Notebook Level

In the panel to the left of your notebook, you'll see the "Tasks" button. Click this to open a view of all tasks in your notebook. This view collects and displays all tasks within your notebook, including tasks related to specific pages.

You can easily create a new notebook-level task by clicking "Add task..." at the top of the list of tasks, then typing in your task name. When you're done, simply hit "Enter" to create the task.

Tasks created in this way are general, notebook-level tasks.

Another way to create a notebook-level task is by using the task menu that you can access from the Pages or Table view. Like the general Tasks view, you'll be able to add notebook-level tasks here, as well as view all tasks within the notebook directly in the menu.

Page Level

There are two ways to create a task specific to a page. You can create a task using the task menu icon in the top right hand corner of the page, or you can create one inline.

Using the Task menu

To access the task menu, simply click on the "Tasks" icon in the top right hand corner of the page. Here you can view all the page-specific tasks, as well as add new ones.

Creating inline tasks

You can also create a page-specific task while typing out your note. Tasks created this way will appear as a task button directly in your text:

To add a task inline, use the quick command menu by typing "/" then finding "Task" in the menu, or starting to type "task" to search for it.

Hit "Enter" or click the task button, then type in the name of your task:

You could also simply remember the written shortcut for task creation, as shown above: !(())

Working with Tasks

To work with your tasks, you just need to click on a task to open it. Each task has the same 8 fields.


The title field is pretty self-explanatory. It's the name of the task, shown in larger lettering at the top. You can change the title by clicking it - a cursor should appear and you can then start typing.

Due Date

To set a due date, simply click inside the due date field and select a date from the calendar.

To quickly choose between months, click on the name of the month at the top. When you're in month view, you can quickly change years by clicking the name of the year at the top.

To remove a due date, click "Clear date".


You can set a reminder for a task even if there's no due date set. Reminders are selected the same way dues dates are, but you can also set an exact time to be reminded by using the arrow keys to increase or decrease the time, or by clicking on the hour or minute button to select a time (with 5 min intervals for the minute). Lastly, select AM or PM.


The repeater field will only appear if you have a due date set. As suggested by the name, the repeater will cause your task to... repeat! 

You can choose the recurrence rate and the number of times it should occur. You can repeat every day, week, month, or year. If you select week or month, there are additional options to choose a day of the week, exact date, and/or if it should occur on the first or last weekday of the month.

Lastly, you can choose when the repeater ends. "Never" will create an infinite repeater, or you can choose to end on a certain date or after a certain number of occurrences.


The member field allows you to assign a task to one or more people who are members of your notebook. 

To add a member, just click "Assigned To", then find the member you want to add from the drop down list. If someone isn't already part of your notebook, you can click "Add Member" at the bottom.


You can add subtasks to a task by clicking "Add Item..." then typing in the subtask name, then "Add" (or press "Enter"). 


The description field is a text field where you can add long form text to your task, if you wish. It's plain text by default, however you can click the two expanding arrows to open the focused text editing mode.

You can then choose between plain text, HTML, or Markdown for your description using the drop down menu in the right hand corner.

If you choose HTML, then a WYSIWYG editor will appear and you can format your text like you would in a normal word processing app. Markdown also offers a few text formatting options, but fewer than can be found in HTML mode.


Lastly, the attachments field allows you to add files to your tasks from a wide variety of different sources.

Marking tasks as done

Wherever you view a task, anywhere in Hypernotes, it will be displayed with a round circle to the left of the task name. Clicking on this circle will mark the task as done, with a green checkmark.

Done tasks appear under the list of open tasks, whether you're viewing it from the main tasks view, or from a dropdown task menu. 

There are a couple of actions you can take on completed tasks. To view these options, click on the "Done" section title:

Hide will hide the list of completed tasks. If the list is already hidden, this will show "Show" instead.

Archive Items will archive all of the completed tasks. These can be viewed, un-archived, or permanently deleted from the task archive section of your notebook settings.

Task Actions

When a task is open, you'll see three buttons in the top right hand corner:

The star, similarly to starring a page, will mark the task as a favorite. In Hypernotes itself, the star simply serves to make the task stand out in the task view or list. If you've connected Hypernotes with Zenkit To Do, the starred task will also appear in the "Favorites" section there.

The ... icon will open a menu of task actions:

Open in...

The first menu item, "Open in To Do" will appear if you have connected your notebook with Zenkit To Do. Clicking this will connect your task list for the notebook to a list in To Do with the same name. 

This will create a link you can use to directly share the task with anyone who already has access to it (i.e. notebook members).


As the name suggests, this option will duplicate the task exactly, down to the content of every field and any repeaters or reminders. The copy will be appended with the word "(copy)", and will appear directly under the original task. 

Show as popup

This option causes the task, and any task opened after selecting this option, to appear floating in the center of your screen, instead of as a panel to the right hand side. If tasks are already shown in popup mode, this option will instead say "Show as panel".

Archive Item

This will add the task to the task archive, which you can access from the notebook settings. Archived items are hidden from the task view, but can be viewed or un-archived at any time.

Delete Item

This will permanently delete the task. This action is not reversible. If you click "Delete Item" you will be asked to confirm deletion
